Thursday was group 2s chance to shine during their inquiry lesson! All their hard work was finally coming to an end. They conducted a wonderful, hands-on, engaging lesson. The lesson was based on light interactions. There were four different stations, reflection, refraction, transparency, and absorption.
Before the students were able to have fun and explore the different stations, the teachers led a review from their previous lesson. This review could have been more engaging. The teachers just asked the students different questions about their previous lesson. In my opinion, the teachers could have led this review differently. I felt as if it was just the teachers asking the students a million questions about the content they should have learned. Although this was a lot of information for the students to process, it was still great to test their knowledge. They seemed to have retained a lot of the content which was surprising!
After reviewing the previous lesson, the scientific method was reviewed.I realized this was pointless for the students. They did not use the scientific method throughout the inquiry lesson. There was no problem for the students to solve, just experiments for them to conduct. I think the teachers could have incorporated more of the scientific method during the lesson so the students could experience that. After the students were introduced to the scientific method, they were told they were going to be working in stations and groups today. There were 4 different stations. The students were handed out a packet and the materials were provided at each station. If this was my lesson I would explain each station in depth for the students in my presentation for all the students to see. Some students need extra directions for them to understand what is going on. Also, I would have modeled each station. Modeling is so important and I feel like that was lost in this lesson. The task for the students was to figure out what they had to do at each station and answer the questions that went along with the station.
The students seemed to really enjoy these experiments. At the end of the lesson, they were able to share their findings from each station. This was a great time for the students to reflect on their experience and show what they learned. The students shared some amazing things that they learned. After reflecting the students had the opportunity to write a letter to their teacher telling her everything they learned about light energy and how it relates to their sensory garden. This was a great independent practice.
Overall, this was a wonderful lesson! The teachers were prepared, knew the content, and were helpful at each station! There was not one minute where the teachers weren't tending to the students. I enjoyed watching this lesson because it was unique and the students seemed to enjoy it. It was hands-on, engaging, and interactive. I loved that! GREAT JOB GROUP 2!!!!! Now you can sit back & relax :)!
