This past Friday I had the wonderful opportunity to be a judge at the Bishop Dunn Science Fair! I was so excited to see all the students projects and judge! I went with a few other classmates around 11:30 to view the projects and judge. We were given the task to walk around and grade the 6th grader's projects. We were informed that they were super nervous for us to judge them! Each project had 2 rubrics. We had to circle around and have the students tell us all about their experiment and then grade based off of the rubric provided. The rubric was great because it had everything we should've been looking for on the student's poster boards. Some parts of the rubric were the hypothesis, materials, charts, real pictures from the experiment, neatness/ organization, spelling/errors, and much more! There were some amazing projects that the students created. They were so unique and I was blown away. Some projects were things even I couldn't think of. Some of the projects I graded were the Stroop effect, diet coke vs Pepsi zero, sound barriers, different dances in dance shoes, batteries in hot or cold temperature, which bike climbed a hill better, and which laundry stain remover worked the best.
There were many more projects but those were just some that stuck out to me.
I was so excited when the 6th grade walked in because I knew a lot of the students from Language Arts Methods. In particular, I worked with two of the students on an individual basis. I was so eager to view their projects and catch up with them! Both students did an amazing job and conducted great experiments. I was able to catch up with them for a few minutes. My one student told me he still remembered my birthday, and what I got for my birthday last year! I was amazed that he actually remembered that about me. Along with catching up with the students,I was videotaped! I volunteered to be on video for a BDMS promotion to show how they collaborate with MSMC. This was an interesting experience because I was able to interact with the students on camera and play the role as a real teacher! The students did such an amazing job! Every single one of them blew me away. They are all filled with amazing knowledge, creativity, and enthusiasm. They presented their projects with such amazing confidence. They all knew their content, excited(a little nervous), and seemed to really have worked hard on their creations. I would love to be a judge again at the BDMS science fair. The students taught me something new!! Just another reason why I love the world of teaching. You teach the students, the students teach you! It is simply amazing!
