This past week I observed group three teach the fourth grade about the different ecosystems. The teachers in group three were Ganny, Cierra, Marie, and Cassandra. This was such an interesting topic for the students along with myself to learn about. Ecosystems play a huge role in our lives. When the topic of the lesson was introduced the students seemed so engaged and ready to learn! The teachers re-introduced the teachers vs students game. I love this and it is always fun to watch the students beat the teachers! I have never used this technique as a classroom management skill, but I would love to one day. If the students were following the rules and cooperating they got a flower, if the teachers were doing well they also got a flower. The flower idea was super cute because it corresponded to their topic. The teachers came up with an amazing check for understanding method. It was three different emojis on a popsicle stick. There was a smiley face: held up if the students understood, a thinking emoji: held up if the students were confused, and a sad face: held up if the students were lost and had no idea what was going on. This method worked great because the students were able to share how they felt through the lesson and the teachers were able to help the students.
To begin, the teachers reviewed material from previous lessons. The students were so quick on their toes to respond to the questions. They really are a great group of kids who pay attention and listen. The students were provided a key terms packet to follow along and take notes during the lesson. Anytime there was a picture of a sunflower on a slide, that meant there were important key terms for the students to copy down. I really loved this because for my lesson the students were confused where to write on the key terms sheet. The sunflower was a great guide and the students were not confused where to fill out key terms. The teachers created such a wonderful word art to showcase the specific key terms they would be learning about in the lesson.
Overall, all of the teachers did an amazing job. They really displayed that they knew the content, managed time well, and were really prepared.
