Real Science is based off Inquiry!

All About Inquiry!

😊😊😊😊😊😊😊

Inquiry is all about the ability to ask questions, find resources, and try to answer the question. Dr. Smirnova conducted a "What's in the bag?" activity. Dr. Smirnova passed around the mystery bag. We each had a turn to touch, shake, and feel the bag from the outside. We had 5 seconds to explore the bag and shared our predictions. I felt a flashlight, and heard a squeaky sound from an item inside. We had the chance to categorize our guesses(which is most likely our hypothesis). A hypothesis is a tentative explanation of the problem given. After making a hypothesis we think of a way how to solve the problem. Each test will have two predictions given what to expect. If hypothesis is correct, or if the hypothesis is incorrect. Then we restate the hypothesis. A hypothesis is not just a guess, even not an educated guess, it is a tentative explanation for the the problem/question based on some type of observation.

Principles of Science

1.Science is uncertain because it is a human activity.
2.Science explanations seem less certain when they are based on indirect content
3.Scientific uncertainty can be reduced through collaboration
4.Scientific argumentation is based on justified evidence.

Steps of Inquiry

1. Formulate a question/problem
2. Make predictions (expected results assuming the hypothesis is correct and different predictions if the hypothesis is wrong).
3.Design steps to investigate the problem and generate data. This will allow you to evaluate your hypothesis. Then you should test your hypothesis.
4.Test results, draw conclusions, and communicate your results to partners, class.

Help! The Avalanche is upon us!

Help! The Avalanche is upon us! Snow falls as I'm sledding down the mountain. I pause to take a peek behind me and I froze In that moment, I thought my life was over. Group 2 Takes on Direct Instruction!

This past week group 2 took on direct instruction and inquiry! I was so excited to see what they had planned for the fourth grade! The teachers of group 2 were Megan, Kelly, and Bailey. All three of them did a wonderful job. They taught about light energy.   They began their lesson by asking the students what they thought their lesson was going to be about. The slide predicted energy. The students shared their thoughts. Most students predictions were correct! After the students knew what they were going to be learning about the teachers began their lesson.  They began by showing the students a word cloud. The word cloud was wonderful! It included key words they would be hearing throughout the lesson. The teachers   handed out a vocabulary sheet for the students to fill in during the lesson. From my perspective, the vocabulary sheet should have been handled differently. It was very long and the students didn't understand how to write their own definitions rather tha...

Back to Learning

Today was the first day of Science and Technology Methods! I am so incredibly excited to begin learning about teaching Science through technology. In the beginning of class today we watched this video(shown on the side of the blog). This video was a great introduction to the course. With being a teacher candidate I think it is important to be knowledgeable about technology. Technology is the key to being a successful teacher. The students of today are so obsessed  with technology. They spend most of their time on the computer, playing video games, and so on. When technology is brought into the classrooms, it opens the doors for engagement. Having your students engaged is super important. As a child, I loved school. Although I loved school, I do not remember much technology involvement. There were very limited resources when it came to technology. I attended computer class once a week, and sometimes if we were participating in a web quest, there would be c...
